Language Mapping in the Operating Room: HSE Neurolinguists Assist Surgeons in Complex Brain Surgery
Researchers from the HSE Center for Language and Brain took part in brain surgery on a patient who had been seriously wounded in the SMO. A shell fragment approximately five centimetres long entered through the eye socket, penetrated the cranial cavity, and became lodged in the brain, piercing the temporal lobe responsible for language. Surgeons at the Burdenko Main Military Clinical Hospital removed the foreign object while the patient remained conscious. During the operation, neurolinguists conducted language tests to ensure that language function was preserved.

HSE University has been acknowledged internationally for its pioneering efforts in integrating artificial intelligence into higher education. The AI Lingua Neural Network developed at HSE was included in the renowned international collection ‘The Global Development of AI-Empowered Higher Education: Beyond the Horizon.’ The compilation was prepared by the Institute of Education (IOE) of Tsinghua University with the support of the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China and a global advisory committee, which included experts from Oxford, UCL, Sorbonne, Stanford, and other leading academic centres.

At the end of August, 2025, a large-scale forum ‘Territory of the Future. Moscow 2030’ took place at the Museon Art Park, where students from different universities demonstrated their inventions and art installations. Graduates of the 2025 Master’s programme in Product and Industrial Design at HSE Art and Design School presented the first Russian autonomous flying robot, Belka, and medical equipment designed for disinfecting donated blood, Ance. AI on Guard of Ecology: Students from Russia and Belarus Propose New Solutions to Environmental Problems
An international online hackathon dedicated to solving environmental problems was held at HSE University in Nizhny Novgorod. Students employed artificial intelligence and computer vision to develop innovative solutions for image segmentation, predictive modelling (forecasting future events based on data from the past) of emissions and creating chatbots for nature reserves and national parks.
