HSE University and Berdakh Karakalpak State University have signed a cooperation agreement to strengthen collaboration in research, education, and innovation. Through the expertise of its Сentre of Digital Technologies for Nature-Based Solutions of the Carbon Measurement Supersites Programme, HSE University will work with colleagues from Uzbekistan to assess climate risks and evaluate opportunities for implementing nature-based climate projects in the region. The partners also plan to develop joint research and educational programmes.

From July 20 to 27, 2026, the HSE Faculty of Urban and Regional Development (FURD) is hosting a summer school for students from Tianjin University dedicated to the preservation of cultural heritage. Throughout the week, participants have attended lectures, practical workshops, and field visits to some of Moscow’s most iconic heritage sites. The summer school is the faculty’s first international programme of this kind and forms part of the expanding educational cooperation between Russia and China.

HSE Graduate School of Business Associate Professor Ekaterina Ivanova, participated in the PRME Global Forum 2026 under the theme “Global Unity Meets Local Impact” from June 29 to July 2 hosted by the American University in Cairo. The forum brought together leaders in responsible management education from around the world to advance sustainable and ethical business practices. This year's Responsible Management Education (RME) Week gathered over 400 scholars, educators, practitioners, and student communities from 58 countries across all regions of the world.

From June 16 to 19, 2026, the International Laboratory of Landscape Ecology of the HSE Faculty of Geography and Geoinformation Technologies held the international scientific conference "Landscape Ecology: Adaptation, Resource, and Risk Management" (LEARRM-2026). HSE University-St Petersburg hosted the Arab Culture Day. About 100 guests from Egypt, Yemen, Jordan, Lebanon, Algeria, and other countries got acquainted with the history of the Persian Gulf states, tried on traditional costumes, and tasted Oriental food.

A seminar involving Russian and Chinese scholars on cooperation between the state and non-profit organisations was held in Beijing. Participants discussed the evolution of institutions, cooperation practices, and challenges facing the development of the non-profit sector, and also presented the results of their research. The meeting concluded with agreements to expand joint projects and academic exchanges.

At the HSE St Petersburg International Partners' Week, the members of the Consortium on Social Entrepreneurship signed the expanded manifesto about cooperation in the sphere of sustainable development, summarised the results of the first working year and took into their ranks the campus in Lima of the University of Piura (Peru).

HSE University-St Petersburg opened a representative office of the Satellite Laboratory on Social Entrepreneurship at the University of Campinas in Brazil. The platform is going to unite research and educational projects in the spheres of sustainable development, communications and social innovations.

Can a Formula 1 race become a testing ground for digital forecasting, and how can climate intelligence help companies adapt to shocks? The second session of International Symposium “Foresight in a Rapidly Changing World” within XXVI April International Academic Conference named after Evgeny Yasin focused on finding answers to these questions. The discussion, which brought together experts from Russia, Canada, France, and Brazil, was moderated by Yulia Milshina, Deputy Director of the ISSEK Foresight Center (HSE University).

HSE University–St Petersburg and UPES University (India) held a joint summer school for students and researchers on the influence of international organisations on environmental regulation policy in Russia and India. HSE University–St Petersburg was represented by Aleksei Sorbale, academic supervisor of the Bachelor's programmes 'Political Science and World Politics' and 'Data Analytics for Politics and Society.'

The delegation of the HSE Graduate School of Business concluded its participation in the 13th I-Week on Sustainability held during the period of March 23-27 at the University of Antwerp - Faculty of Business and Economics, marking another significant milestone in international academic collaboration. This year's event welcomed 542 participants representing 44 nationalities across 6 continents, with participants of this educational program joining both online and on campus. The diverse gathering brought remarkable energy and global perspectives that enriched every discussion and activity throughout this interdisciplinary intense week on sustainability.

More than 3,000 international school students took part in the INTO HSE International Olympiad, whose award ceremonies were held in Tashkent and Bishkek in March 2026. The university’s outreach events also included final examinations, presentations of academic programmes, and on-site selection tests for prospective applicants. In Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, nearly 200 participants received diplomas as winners and prize-winners. The best of them will be eligible to apply for state-funded places at HSE.

In 2026, HSE University–St Petersburg is launching a new English-taught Master’s in Social Entrepreneurship and Innovation. In this interview, Magdalena Gaete, scientific supervisor of the programme, shares why social entrepreneurship is crucial in the modern world and what skills students will gain during their studies.

Valeria Vinogradova, a researcher at HSE University, together with British colleagues, studied how language proficiency affects cognitive processing in deaf adults. The study showed that higher language proficiency—regardless of whether the language is signed or spoken—is associated with higher activity and stronger functional connectivity within the brain network responsible for cognitive task performance. The findings have been published in <em>Cerebral Cortex</em>.

On February 4–5, 2026, the HSE BRICS Competition Law and Policy Centre (BRICS Competition Centre), together with the Egyptian Competition Authority (ECA), held a meeting of the BRICS Working Group for the Research of Competition Issues in Food Markets in Cairo. The antimonopoly authorities agreed to launch a joint analysis of the grain sector to be conducted with the support of the BRICS Competition Centre and based on the centre’s research report. On the sidelines of the event, a cooperation agreement was also signed between the St Petersburg International Mercantile Exchange (SPIMEX) and the Egyptian Mercantile Exchange.

HSE University, the National Research League of Cardiac Genetics, and the Central State Medical Academy of the Administrative Directorate of the President will hold the Second ‘Genetics and the Heart’ Congress with international participation. The event will take place on February 7–8, 2026, at the HSE University Cultural Centre.

An international team, including researchers from HSE University, examined an unusual SARS-CoV-2 sample obtained from an HIV-positive patient. Genetic analysis revealed multiple mutations and showed that the virus had been evolving inside the patient’s body for two years. This finding supports the theory that the virus can persist in individuals for years, gradually accumulate mutations, and eventually spill back into the population. The study's findings have been published in <em>Frontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology.<br /></em>

A team of researchers from Russia and the United Kingdom has, for the first time, provided a detailed account of the emergence and evolution of the Russian Sign Language (RSL) interpreter training system. This large-scale study spans from the 19^th century to the present day, revealing both the achievements and challenges faced by the professional community. Results have been published in <em>The Routledge Handbook of Sign Language Translation and Interpreting</em>.

UNCTAD report acknowledged contribution of the International Research and Educational Foresight Center of HSE University Institute for Statistical Studies and Economics of Knowledge (ISSEK) to development of Technology Foresight (TF) and Technology Assessment (TA) methods for policy-making in long-term planning and anticipatory governance, including into Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievement.
